Janet Jackson Readies European Tour For 2010

Janet Jackson Rock Wit U Tour 2008

Pop & RnB Goddess Janet Jackson has revealed in an interview with the The Times newspaper (UK) that she is planning a European tour in 2010.  It has been over 9 years since Janet has embarked on a European leg, the last time was for “The Velvet Rope” tour in 1998. Her last tour “Rock Witchu” for 2008’s LP “Discipline” was planned to be worldwide but was cancelled due to her coming down with Vertigo, an illness which could be detrimental for a performer who dances around as much as she does.

As mega Janet fan I’m sure you know I’m screaming right now, really and truly this is what Janet needs I think f*ck the US they dont even know good music anymore, all their wrapped up in is whose shaking there coochie in a video. Tut!.

Funny enough I’m not too surprised shes taking it over here I’ve noticed a lot of US artists are starting to promote overseas more than their home country, and to be honest it’s better, expand your market, improve your fan base and reach out to people who arent lucky enough to visit your shows in the states.

It’s been way too long since Janet’s rocked this side of the pond we all await her return, That’s the way love goes.

"Sei tu", dopo Sanremofestival.59, riecco Manuel Auteri

Man blir lite lurad ibland…..

June Evans – If You Want My Lovin’

WTF...WABBITS?

Since my last blog post, an overwhelming urge came over me to create art that perverted the cartoon rabbit. I don’t know where it came from. Like many kids from the 1980’s, I grew up watching Bugs Bunny and salivating during cereal commercials featuring Trix The Rabbit. Trix always had some scheme to get one over on those asshole kids, but the poor bastard always managed to slip up before he could get a bite of that colorful sugar crusted breakfast cereal.

“Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids,” sang a choir of children’s voices at the end of every commercial.

Anyway, the sudden inspiration behind these “Wabbit” paintings remains a mystery to me. I guess it doesn’t really matter. Who cares? Does every cool piece of art have to be explained?

The first of two “Wabbit” paintings is really crazy. I call it “WA’SUP DOC”.
The piece measures 24in” x 30in” on gallery profile canvas. As always I drew, painted and distressed the character on sketch paper and later collaged it onto the canvas. For me, the dark suit and TNT detonator spell fun with a capital F U N.

Next up is “THE SAVAGE SHE-WABBIT”. This work measures 24in” x 30in” on gallery profile canvas and was created using the same process as “WA’ SUP DOC”.
A rather curvy bombshell in a white rabbit suit is the key component in this composition. Yowza!
I think the irony in the piece is also fun. It’s a well know fact that rabbits are usually food for larger animals, but make no mistake, “THE SAVAGE SHE-WABBIT” is at the top of the food chain in this composition.

Both “WA’SUP DOC” & “THE SAVAGE SHE-WABBIT” are now available on my website.

Same same, but different.

Enorme.

M / GENERAL ELEKTRIKS : Medley “Melody Nelson”

Current digs of not so current albums

I’ve been living here in Manchester for about 2 months now and i feel underwhelmed by university experience thus far. I mean, drinking a lot of gin and going to parties is definitely fun, and my lectures are – for the most part – interesting, but i don’t feel i’ve really settled. All my flatmates are older than me and i only consider one to be a genuine friend, in that we share common ground in music and sense of humour. I get patronised a lot for coming straight from secondary school which irks me infinitely and one girl in particular is so confrontational it terrifies me. Some people think they are so worldly aware after they have had what is basically an extended fucking holiday. I haven’t really met anyone with similar music tastes to me, even though i’ve been attending plenty of gigs and i don’t consider anyone on my course a friend. I miss my old friends, we could talk for hours about music and life and religion. I don’t think i’ve had a deep conversation with anyone here yet. Manchester is, however, an amazing city with so much going on. There are gigs i want to see every single week and only my financial constraints are stopping me going to them all.

Anyway, enough of my self-indulgent grumblings. The main point of this post is to share the albums which are the only music i’ve felt like listening to recently. I tend to just put certain tracks from them on repeat, never tiring of them unlike most other music right now.

Nick Drake – Pink Moon

Intricate, understated genius.

Radiohead – Hail To The Thief

Not their best album in my humble opinion, but brilliant in places.

Steely Dan – Aja

This album is just such a great time. Steve Gadd tears it up.

Wild Beasts – Two Dancers

Definitely one of my favourites from this year. They have really progressed from Limbo Panto.

Boards Of Canada – Music Has The Right To Children

Quite simply incredible on all levels.

E surpresa: amei o último lançamento do artista, The Ecstatic.

Mos Def MySpace

E quem sabe faz ao vivo, neah Faustão? .P

SONGS TO MAKE SANDWICHES TO

This week’s theme was a toughie: SONGS TO MAKE SANDWICHES TO was inspired by a forum on music mag Word’s site. While Word readers couldn’t take the subject seriously I figured there was room for someone who did. And who better than little ol’ obsessive me? So sandwiches it was, but I made it easier by also including hamburgers, hot-dogs and the like. I even allowed songs about stuff that goes into a sandwich, like honey, tomatoes, chicken. Still I suffered some abuse. Impossible, you emailed. Why not make it broader and include all food pleaded Lynden. Crap theme, too hard, moaned Zoe. Oh you listeners of little faith.

We opened with a novelty song: SANDWICHES ARE BEAUTIFUL from Bob King, but in case you’re worried about this setting a tone for the rest of the show, be assured – rockers, r&b artists and especially the alternative pop singers all delivered some edgy songs on sandwiches.

Do you know where the word sandwich was born?  London. 1762. An English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited the fast-food product that we now know as the sandwich.

Today, our favourite version of meat between bread is called a hamburger. So we got the show rolling with the Whitlams’ brilliant  I MAKE HAMBURGERS followed by The Flaming Lips and SHE DON’T USE JELLY. New York based, Japanese duo Cibo Matto were next with LE PAIN PERDU. The name of the band is Italian for crazy food and the title of the song is French for Toast. The lyrics in their songs are all primarily concerned with food, well seemingly anyway, and I liked them so much I also played another of their tunes, KNOW YOUR CHICKEN later in the program. Here’s the crazy video clip of that track and, although he doesn’t appear in the clip, that’s Sean Lennon on bass.

Two items that elevate ordinary old toast to dessert status are marmalade and honey. So any excuse to play Patti Labelle’s LADY MARMALADE and Aretha Franklin’s HONEY and I’m there. Yum yum.

Louis Jordan loves his BEANS AND CORNBREAD while Lil Johnson pushes metaphor to it’s limits with SAM THE HOT DOG MAN. Neil Young is partial to TUPELO HONEY on his sandwich, while  Jimmy Buffet can’t stop singing about a CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE.

When it comes to cheeseburgers, whether we like it or not, the burger with the highest profile has got to be MacDonald’s. Hell, there was a whole conversation about their burgers in the film PULP FICTION. Ah yes, how could we not include that iconic scene where John Travolta and Samuel Jackson discuss the merits of the French McDonald’s – ROYALE WITH CHEESE?

Two tunes that pay homage to the fact that a good cuppa is needed to wash down a sandwich or piece of toast were next.  Canadian Jeff Healey, gave Gertrude Lawrence’s A CUP OF COFFEE, A SANDWICH, AND YOU a burl and  then it was TOAST AND MARMALADE FOR TEA, a nice piece of bubblegum from the band Tin Tin.

Kaiser Cheifs reminded us of that vital sandwich ingredient – tomatoes –   with TOMATO IN THE RAIN. And then it was the hilarious TOAST from Paul Young and the Streetband. Classic. Take a look at this clip from 1978.

In Mexican cuisine, a sandwich is either a taco or a burrito. Beck didn’t sound too happy when he sang SATAN GAVE ME A TACO. It seems taking delivery of that snack had all kinds of repercussions. Meanwhile, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention went CRUISING FOR BURGERS. As you do.

All girl group Care Bears on Fire let loose with the precautionary BARBIE EAT A SANDWICH. Nice animated clip too. Check it out:

Let’s talk chicken. Here’s a question: What’s a chicken sandwich without MAYONNAISE? Smashing Pumpkins offered up a track dedicated to the condiment of all condiments. Mmmmm mmmmm: chicken, lettuce and mayo on white bread – can’t get better than that. The Detroit Grand Pubahs reinforced the fact that all songs, but especially those about food, are really about sex. The tune? The very cheeky WE CAN MAKE SANDWICHES. Here we go: another crazy video clip:

Out of the disco and out on the road: Little Feat are sang all about HAMBURGER MIDNIGHT and then John Mellencamp reckons that life is like choosing between HOTDOGS AND HAMBURGERS, (not sure what he’s getting at there).

Comedian Mitch Hedberg does a great skit on sandwiches and I particularly liked the bit about the Club Sandwich. We followed that with a dangerous piece of radio: Metal band Psychostick with THIS IS NOT A SONG, IT’S A SANDWICH!

After Psychostick we needed to calm down and what better way than with Feist and a song about the calming qualities of HONEY? You wouldn’t exactly call The Sugarcubes, (with Bjork), a calming influence. They can’t decide what to put on their sandwich and are threatening to EAT THE MENU. Check out the very young Bjork and a fabulous floating burger, all in one clip!

We closed the show with an oldie but a goodie: I LIKE BREAD AND BUTTER by the New Beats. Check out the clip from 1964:

Next week the show will feature Songs about Elvis; not by Elvis – although that would be good too – Songs about Elvis. Come on this one is easy, so start sending those requests in.

But for now, here’s this week’s playlist:

Sandwiches Are Beautiful - Bob King I Make Hamburgers - The Whitlams She Don’t Use Jelly - The Flaming Lips Le Pain Perdu (Toast) - Cibo Matto Lady Marmalade - Patti Labelle Honey - Aretha Franklin Sam the Hot Dog Man - Lil Johnson Beans And Cornbread - Louis Jordan Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison Cheeseburger In Paradise - Jimmy Buffett Royale With Cheese - John Travolta/Sam Jackson (Pulp Fiction) Punk Sandwich - Dixie Dregs A Cup Of Coffee, A Sandwich, And You - Jeff Healey Toast And Marmalade For Tea - Tin Tin Tomato In The Rain - Kaiser Chiefs Toast - Paul Young & The Streetband Hot Dog - Led Zeppelin Satan Gave Me A Taco - Beck Cruising for Burgers - Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention Barbie Eat a Sandwich - Care Bears on Fire Know Your Chicken - Cibo Matto Mayonnaise - Smashing Pumpkins We Can Make Sandwiches - Detroit Grand Pubahs Hamburger Midnight - Little Feat Hotdogs And Hamburgers - John Mellencamp Sandwiches - Mitch Hedberg This Is Not A Song, It’s A Sandwich! - Psychostick Honey Honey – Feist Eat the Menu - The Sugarcubes I Like Bread and Butter - The New Beats

Sound-A-Like # 1 - Laura Branigan - Living A Lie v.s. Bon Jovi - Burning For Love

Have you ever been listening to one song, then all of a sudden, boom! You start singing the lyrics to another because the songs as soo similar? Me too! Hence this post, and perhaps future posts called “Sound-A-Like.”

For this first Sound A Like segment, give a listen to Laura Branigan’s ”Living A Lie” (1982). It’s a great early 80s tune, full of keyboards and Pat Benatar like lyrics. I discovered her and this song as a b-side to her bigger hit “Gloria” on a 45. I have been going through my collection, and getting rid of the ones I don’ want. But before I do, I give them a listen. I like her, and I think I will try to buy a full album by her.

Anyways, listen to “Living A Lie” then, go 2 years later to “Burning For Love” (1984) by Bon Jovi. Seriously, it’s the same song! Bon Jovi’s has more lead guitar riffs, but the melody and pace are the same! Amazing! “Burning For Love” is a b-side to “She Don’t Know Me.” Again, very 80s, and oh how I love it! These are two different songs in theme, yet, so similar, I can sing one set of lyrics with the other!

So, hence the small world of music we live in. I included some youtube videos so you can hear what I hear. I also included Neil Young’s “Southern Man” (1970). The verses in both previous songs are also similar sounding. Not much, but close. Enjoy!

Also, if you know of any other “Sound A Like” songs, please send them my way!

Thanks!

Laura Branigan – “Living A Lie”

Bon Jovi – “Burning For Love”

Sorta Similar – Neil Young “Southern Man”

During the “I heard screaming…bull whip’s cracking…” is similar to the verses in “Burning For Love.”

Kıraç - Gidiyorum

Ne başkası oldu ne de olacak
Sen çalmazsan kapım açılmayacak
Şimdi içimde yanan bu ateş
Sanma ki bir son bulacak

Hiç utanmam gülüm divaneyim
Parçalanmış dünyam viraneyim
Seni her şeyden çok çok istedim
Vuruldum avareyim

Ne olurdu benim olsan
Şu yaralarımı sarsan
Bıktım artık yol almaktan
Önüme çıkıp durdursan

Gidiyorum buralardan
Tüm rüzgarlar senin olsun
Benden ayrı rüyadasın
Dilerim birgün utanırsın

Yıllar sonra bir gün yaşlandığında
O ipek saçların ağardığında
Kuru yaprak gibi dağıldığında
Kalırsın tek başına

Oysa seni ne çok ne çok sevmiştim
Tüm çiçeklerimi sana dermiştim
Şimdi ellerim boş yüreğim sarhoş
Oysa neler ümit etmiştim

-ŞİİR-

Elimde,
Eski bir aşktan kalma tutku damlacıkları
Arkamda,
Diz boyu balçık hatıraların çığlığı var
Yırtmış atmışım her şeyi,
Bir ben kalmışım ortada
Birde sen içimde,
Taa şuramda…

Trevor Guthrie (ex-soulDecision) solo

After soulDecision (whose huge hit “Faded” was, hard to believe, 10 years ago!!) imploded after a club tour in 2005 supporting their terrific and underrated Shady Satin Drug CD, I was wondering when we’d hear again from lead singer and songwriter Trevor Guthrie. The Vancouverite’s MySpace site was quiet until now, when a new called “All I Ever Wanted” was posted. Here’s what Trevor’s MySpace bulletin said today:

Date: Nov 14, 2009 5:48 PM
Subject:
New Trevor Guthrie song.
Body:
Hi everyone, though i would let you know the album is finally done and i have put a new song up here if you would like to check it out. I wrote this song about my friend Ryan Gosling

Do check this one out at his MySpace site.   I look forward to hearing more new Trevor Guthrie songs in 2010!

Lessons from Stayin' Alive

1. You can tell by the way that someone “uses (his) walk” that he really ought to stop using walking as a means of communication.

2. We can try to understand “a New York high Jamaican man” or even “that New York times are made for men” but not the correct Bee Gees lyric “the New York Times’ effect on man” which is just plain incomprehensible.

3. The Bee Gees wrote the line “I’m a dancing man and I just can’t lose” in 1977 but, surprisingly, the victory rates of dancing men over real life have since been in steady decline. (edf)

En ngel i min ficka…..

Change – Angel In My Pocket

The Glow Of Love

2PM — Heartbeat

Wow, what have I done to deserve the deluge of music videos from my favorite artists? I am not worthy! Just like 2PM without Jaebum is incomplete. In fact, this is me watching this mv against my Jaebum wallpaper, which actually came into rotation by coincidence:

I don’t really approve of the strange little ponytails sticking out of their heads. How can you take anybody seriously when they look like that? And this is a very serious video — the intensity is palpable through the dark color scheme and strong beats. 2PM’s dancing is great, as expected, but I’m not a fan of their faux-snakeskin suits. When Taec’s hair isn’t defying gravity, it looks like he bleached the top of his head.

As LC told me earlier this week, Junsu has definitely had something done to his face. I don’t have an opinion on his altered appearance, but I cringe just thinking about what he must’ve had to undergo to achieve the new look. I also wonder what’s going on with him at 2:14. At first I thought those fringes were attached to his shirt, but upon closer examination I believe it’s simply an out-of-place scarf.

Overall, though, I like the video. The 2PM boys display an appropriate amount of emotion on their faces, which enhances the song. I didn’t have any particular feelings toward it before, but after watching the mv, my impression is positive.

AnD´s Party no Essencial da Lapa

AND´s Party - Lotada de Gente Bonita

L’altra è “Could it be magic” di Barry Manilow.

Le bonus track: “Per te“, “Non dirmi no“.

Tuned-On! Top 30 #313 November 9/09

The new edition of the Tuned-On! Top 30, my personal chart, is available here.

100 Akres & Roz Bell fended off significant challenges to hang on to #1 for two more weeks with their free download of “Pink Cadillac” (the free download link is on the chart page). Now we’ll have to wait and see in two weeks if either Dan Black’s “Alone” or Mika’s “Blame It On The Girls” will top the chart. Calvin Harris’ “Ready For The Weekend” and Matt & Kim’s “Daylight” (also a free download) both advance into the Top 5. David Rush’s “Shooting Star”, Hot Chelle Rae’s “I Like To Dance”, and “We Are Okay” by Joshua Radin all become top ten entries.

Just below, the fastest riser on the chart is another great Dan Black track, the club-worthy “Pump My Pumps”. Dan’s CD UN is supposed to come out in North America digitally towards the end of November. Also making a big move is one of last week’s debuts, “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys. Alicia’s chorus should become the new slogan for NYC!

Five terrific debuts round out the chart this week, and three of them are downloadable for free. In the past few weeks in this blog, you’ve already read about Simon Curtis’ “Delusional”, Mitchell Hunter’s “Somebody Else’s”, and Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”, but my other debuts belong to Dutch DJ Dash Berlin (who has actually teamed up with former Alice Deejay members) featuring vocalist Emma Hewitt in impending club smash “Waiting” and UK pop/dance singer Luigi Masi with his free download of “Radar”. Luigi also released a CD this past summer called Save His Shoes but it does not include “Radar”. Check out more information about these artists by clicking on their picture on the chart, which links to either their MySpace page or their websites.

Have a great week and post any comments you might have!

Below is the video for Dash Berlin’s “Waiting”, featuring Emma Hewitt.

Lessons from Nothing To Lose (album)

1.If you were at the record store, circa 1997, browsing through the new releases and actually decided to get this album thinking what have you’ve got to lose, then you’ve been had.

2. If you still get high playing “25 minutes,” then it’s too late for you. You’ll learn that  “kisses” rhymes with “is” and “far” rhymes with “are.” Sell that drug by the gram.

3. If you’ve forgotten the lessons from “The Actor,” then you’ve forgotten to evolve. And you probably still don’t have your own car.

4. If you have gone to a karaoke bar and sang the lyrics of “Paint My Love” over the minus one of “Nothing to Lose” (and vice versa), then you’ll notice that they’re fuckin’ the same. Plus one to your stupid, epiphany points.

5. Michale really needs to learn to rock. (jmt)

Antics in the Backseat

Egészen biztosan senkinek nem mond túl sokat egyelőre az Antics in the Backseat neve, ám már most érdemes odafigyelni a csapatra, akik az elmúlt napokban készültek el MySpace oldalukkal. A srácok dallamos indie-s zenét tolnak, saját bevallásuk szerint 2024-ben alakultak, és első, “Antics in the Backseat” című dalukat már meg is hallgathatjátok a profiljukon!

Sleigh Bells

DAMN. Despite their meek sounding name, Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss drop some insanely heavy artillery for two people. I’ve been sitting here now for about 10 minutes, listening to the same three tracks over and over trying to think of how to describe the music. Alice Glass fronting Lightning Bolt with Swizz Beatz replacing Brian Chippendale? That was the best I could come up with. Who cares. Sleigh Bells play really, really loud, the beats are really, really huge,  and they are an insane amount of fun. Someone sign these two and force them to release large quantities of music.

>> Here are five songs by them. Enjoy.

En liten teori…..

Aaliyah – Back and Forth

China Crisis - Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms

China Crisis are one of those ’80s groups who are very easy to forget. In fact they slipped my mind for the best part of two decades. Subtle socialists, mellow experimentalists, masters of understatement…it’s hardly surprising they drifted off the radar.

And yet, when I found this copy of their first album recently, I remembered how fascinated I had been with Peter Saville’s sleeve design when I found it in the ‘C’ section at Kays Records & Tapes all those years ago…how I felt drawn to it, but always seemed to have something more important to buy with my pocket money.  I did eventually buy their third album, “Flaunt The Imperfection”, which I enjoyed, then forgot about, then rediscovered recently.

“Difficult Shapes…” captures the group in their naive, yet cautiously probing, early days, resulting in at least one classic semi-hit, “Christian”, though I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the whole album.  I like a lot of the popular music that emerged in the immediate wake of Punk; a period when the industry allowed and fostered the creative autonomy of earnest young men with a desire to reinvent pop in their own image. Despite some of the typical sonic-signifiers of the era, including the dreaded fretless bass, I think this album still stands-up to close scutiny in a way that many other more well-remembered acts fail to, and highlights the vacuous lack of honesty and imagination displayed by most groups of comparable popularity today.

"THIS IS IT":EL LEGADO PARA SEGUIR ADORANDO A MICHAEL JACKSON

Music is my radar

[Nick Drake - One of this things first]

I could have been a sailor, could have been a cook
A real live lover, could have been a book.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
I could be
Here and now
I would be, I should be
But how?
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

I could have been your pillar, could have been your door
I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed for more.
Could have been your statue, could have been your friend,
A whole long lifetime could have been the end.
I could be yours so true
I would be, I should be through and through
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

I could have been a whistle, could have been a flute
A real live giver, could have been a boot.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
I could be even here
I would be, I should be so near
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

Michael Jackson – This Is It!

Quarta feira passada, dia 28 de Outubro, assisti à estreia do filme This Is It.

Resumidamente, Michael estava preparando uma última tourné para Julho do próximo ano com o nome: This Is It!
