Soap Collectors have thus far been little more than a blip to me. They don’t have a record out, but there are some demos floating on MySpace and Muxtape… I actually heard their tune through Justin Ouellette’s sample mix and it pretty much blew my mind, so I hit them up with an email and got the sweetest reply in response, to the extent that I actually blogged about it at the time. But more importantly, they sent me an mp3, a tune called ‘Windows’, with promises of more material to come.

That was probably six months ago now, and still no sign of an EP or album, but these guys are definitely a band to watch. The tunes are blissful, dreamy, impeccably crafted, and the vocals are sugar-sweet, like going to candy paradise. When the promised record finally drops, it is going to be massive.

Anyhow, write to them and see if they are as courteous to you as they were to me. It’ll probably brighten your day. And if they throw in a mp3 or two, well then, all the better.

Small Business News: Healthcare Prognosis? | Small Business Trends

France Gall - 1968

This is a strange album. It is France Gall’s psychedelic record, since it was obligatory for all musicians to release one during the late-1960s. I haven’t heard many others from French musicians, except for Bonnie & Cylde by Gainsbourg and Bardot, so I don’t know how prevalent the trend was over there. But I hope there are more of them, because this is astronomically cheesy and leaves me wanting more (it’s only 31 minutes long, an ideal album length). You can probably get some idea of what it is going to sound like just by looking at the artwork, which is a ridiculously typical late-’60s psychedelic album cover.

Being a France Gall album, it is not all psychedelic pop; there are, as always, some extremely cheesy string-based pop songs, and I think that is part of its appeal. It’s very fun, and there are a few S. Gainsbourg-penned songs here, which is always good.

And by that we mean announced a bunch of tour dates (including one somewhat close to me, in Tacoma). Oh and her video for “Telephone” with Beyonce (see above) may or may not have been banned from MTV. It wasn’t, but CNN said it was.

CNN reported on Sunday that MTV wouldn’t touch the video with a ten-inch pole because it was “so strong, so suggestive, so sexual, so violent” but MTV denied that was true. They said:

“MTV did not ban Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s ‘Telephone’ video — in fact, we premiered it on Friday, March 12, on-air and online at MTV.com, two days before this story was falsely reported,” said MTV Executive Vice President of Music and Talent Amy Doyle. “Fans can continue to catch the video as we repeat it on-air and online.”

So we were sitting around and hard a REALLY loud POP and all the lights in the neighborhood went out. Found out today that one of the transformers in our neighborhood caught on fire, so this is what last night looked like a 9:45, 10:45, 12:45 am. The power finally was restored at about 3:30 this afternoon ONLY because some of the guys in the neighborhood walked up to where the electric company was working on another area on the same block and spoke to them. Turned out they didn’t even know about it!!! Two of the workers took one of the trucks and came and took care of it. THEY DIDN’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT!!! LOL

Tall Ships - Self Titled (2010, Big Scary Monsters)

Another addition to the ever growing Big Scary Monsters roster of indie talent, Tall Ships from Falmouth have released a limited run screen printed debut EP that sold out before they knew it on pre-orders alone. I’m usually a fan of the BSM catalogue, so it’s always nice to hear something new.

‘Books’ opens up the album with a mix of big synth lines that anyone could sing along to, to a softer verse, as Ric Phethean’s vocals wash over you, with some great rhyming in there as well. ‘time is precious / time will forget us’.

‘Words Are Pegs Upon Which We Hang Ideas’ is a lot more within the realms of afrobeat foals-esque indie, and has a great tempo and upbeat feel, and there is even some old samples over the top. Really picking up towards the end, I think this is one for the dance floor at times.

‘Beanieandodger’ is another number with real pace behind it, with the offbeat hi hats driving things along nicely in the chorus, whilst the guitar bangs out consistently nice and simple riffs.

‘Vessels’ ends the EP, and is a track that really grows throughout. What sounds like 3 part harmony sounds great against the almost hymn-like guitar and organ part. Maybe this is modern church music, who knows? When the drums kick in though, this is a truly epic number, and builds and builds, with some great bits in between. Quite a unique little number.

This is a good debut EP by these guys, and it’s always good to have a bit of variety in a first release, which this has. ‘Books’ is one of my least favourites personally, as I think they do the upbeat stuff better. They’ve also just been on tour with Tubelord, so I’m sure they’re building up quite a number of fans by now.

One morning, you wake up, scratch your ass a couple of times, check your eyes for that crusty crap, wipe off the crusty crap, find breakfast, eat breakfast, grab your guitar, grab your amp, leave home, and visit your buddy down the road. You’ve known this guy for years. You’ve known this guy for months. You’ve known this guy for the better part of a day. In that time, you’ve discovered that he can play music just as well as you can. You both listen to the same awesome records, watch the same awesome movies; you’ve even dated the same ‘awesome’ women. You know this person and they know you. One day, the day that this one morning falls under, you guys decide to put the old tape recorder your friend found in his basement one dark weekend to use. You spend a lot of long hours playing the same damn parts over and over again until they’re just right. You put pieces of each other in your music; bits of your souls. That chord progression was last weekend’s fascinating walk in the park. That drum fill was last month’s belching contest. These songs are, essentially, you in every way. So, you get yourselves pressed onto several hundred vinyl records, put yourselves out in a limited release, and interact with each and every listener on possibly the most intimate of levels.

That’s what I like to think went down in the months leading up to this.

Psych/pop outfit Velvet Davenport have a new 7″ coming out on Shdwply Records.

The record, which will be released March 31st, features two new tracks called “Get Out” and “Run”. On this particular record, the band collaborated with Ariel Pink and Gary War; both accomplished psych-pop/lo-fi artists.

There was a time when Jennifer Lopez was synonymous with a Billboard Hot 100 hit. She’s managed to score four No.1 hits in the US, but since the release of “All I Have,” a duet with L.L. Cool J things hasn’t looked good for Lopez. That collaboration managed to top the Hot 100 and even reached No.2 in the UK back in 2003.

The track was included on her This Is Me…Then set, which was led by the single “Jenny from the Block.” It featured, then, boyfriend Ben Affleck in a video inspired by all the paparazzis in their lives. In 2005, Jennifer Lopez released the album Rebirth. The set included the No.12 hit “Get Right” and “Hold You Down,” a duet with Fat Joe that peaked at No.64.

Latin album Como ama una mujer was issued in 2007, the year when Brave also saw the light of day. The latter album was led by “Do It Well,” a No.31 hit – far worse than the UK peak at No.11. When Jennifer Lopez collaborates with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart and performs at the 2009 American Music Awards, things are looking good. “Louboutins” made it to No.13 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Songs chart, but failed to reach any other upon its release in December last year.

Her new album Love? includes collaborations with Darkchild and Danja and last month, Epic announced it will part ways with Jennifer Lopez. No announcement has been made on what label will pick this project up, but rumours say that it’s Island Def Jam after Lopez being spotted to the record label’s chairman L.A. Reid, tha famous songwriter.

According to Wikipedia, “Everybody’s Girl” is expected to be the second single from the set. According to the German radio station, this was praised a stand out track. WelcheMusic hopes that “Story of My Life,” a track signed Rihanna/Ne-Yo production team StarGate. It’s usually bound for success.

The brief glory days of AM rock radio

If you’re younger than I am or if you didn’t grow up in America, you might not know what I mean by AM rock radio, so I’ll try to explain.

The transition of music and music listeners from radio to the Internet reminds me a lot of something I’ve seen before: the late ’70s/early ’80s trend away from playing music on AM radio. If you listen to music on the radio at all, you are probably doing it on the FM band. Nowadays, AM is reserved mostly for news and talk radio. It wasn’t always that way.

AM was where you heard all the top hits of the day for many many years. That was still true when I was a young adolescent in the mid-70s, just getting a taste for rock ‘n’ roll. The sound was a bit trebly and not in stereo, but that was normal. No one thought anything of it. FM radio existed at that point, but there were very few FM stations, at least in my neck of the woods, in the Texas Hill Country. Usually there was one classical station (if you were lucky) and one station that played elevator music (pretty much guaranteed, if there was only one, that would be it). And there was a problem called FM drift. You had to keep retuning the dial every few minutes, cuz the signal would drift to the left or right and it would be off the station.

There was a brief golden age, between about ‘75 and ‘79, when the music on AM radio was especially good. I’m talking about rock and pop stations, but the country music stations were also pretty good at that time also. It basically ended when disco began to take over and you heard nothing else for a few years till everybody got fed up and people started smashing their records and wearing “Disco Sucks” T-shirts.

There were some basic rules to AM rock radio. For one thing, it couldn’t rock too hard. For another, it had to be clean. Sex and drug references had to be well-disguised in metaphors. It was for the kids, but Mom and Dad were going to be listening, so no shenanigans. Strangely enough, those vague restrictions led to some pretty good songcraft.

There was some dreck on the airwaves to be sure, but any hour of a popular AM station playlist from ‘76 would blow the crap they play today right out of the water. Maybe somebody else can come up with other examples.

A couple months ago I posted, “A Few Thoughts on Music Videos”, anyway, I just watched a few music videos in succession, and thought I’d post the playlist along with a bit of text commentary if you will.

I liked the Brick and Lace video for the sole reason the singers Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne are in it. The video was nothing too special, but Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne are definitely easy on the eyes! It was the first time I saw the video for that song. It seems it was one of two songs that was released on the re-release of their album that was not on the original Love is Wicked album.

Pink’s video for “Funhouse”, again nothing too spectacular. The video provides imagery that works with lyrical content. I was watching the uncensored version thank you very much! Oh, and Ms Moore is not too bad looking in the video either!

I had never seen the video for Rah Digga’s “Breakfool”. It was nice to see her. It is too bad her album from circa 2004 Everything Is A Story never saw the light of day. The video version I believe is slightly different from the LP version. The video version seems to have more pronounced beats.

The last two, old Sugababes videos from the original line up, and first album. “Overload” being the first singe, and “Run for Cover” the third single. “Overload” is a pretty good video, as it is mostly just the group members singing their respective parts. And assuming it is true to the studio version, we get to see exactly who is singing when, and who is involved in the vocal melodies. “Run for Cover” is not too great, but not a bad early Sugababes track.

Getting Started In The Business

So you’re ready to get serious about the business. You’ve done the local talent shows, you’ve recorded some demos in your cousins bedroom, and you’ve watched all the VH-1’s “Behind The Music” shows. You are ready to tackle the big leagues, right!? Good! Here’s what you need to do to get started.

First, READ! Read A LOT! And I’m not talking about consumer magazines (ie. Blender and Hip-Hop Weekly), but respected industry books (ie. Billboard, Urban Network, and the bible of the music industry, All You Need To Know About The Music Business). These will let you know what’s really happening in the industry, who’s making moves, and most importantly, help you see how things REALLY operate in this unique business.

Second, if you want to be one of the greats, play with the greats. There are a lot of opportunities for you to mix and mingle with industry insiders. You just have to know where to go. There are music conferences held throughout the year, everywhere from New York to California, down to Nashville, Atlanta, and Texas. Conferences like SXSW, Urban Network, Atlantis, and several mixshow summits. Do some research and find one happening somewhere close to you. They don’t cost much (some as low as $50), and on top of learning valuable information from the best in the business, you will get to meet people who may be able to help take your career to the next level.

Lastly (for now), is STUDY YOUR CRAFT!!! Playing small gigs at your family reunion, local talent show/open mic, and in your boys basement are good places to develop, but if you plan on competing with the artist who dominate the airwaves, you have to constantly improve your sound. If you’re a singer for example, learn to play an instrument, consider taking vocal lessons, and/or learn a few dance steps. Watch the artists you’d like to open for, and find what it is that makes them stand out so much. Don’t just copy what they do, find ways to improve and make it your own. Don’t ever get caught feeling like you’ve perfected everything there is to do. Fans will always look for something new, and if you don’t provide it, someone else will.

Doing these few things can give you the foundation required to build a successful career and give you an upper edge against the thousands of other artist fighting for their time in the spotlight.

I was looking in vain for YouTube footage of Orange Juice playing “Moscow Olympics” and discovered that there’s a band named after the song. You’d guess such a band would be pretty good, and you’d be right. But you might not guess they’d be from the Philippines! I didn’t know before tonight that there’s a healthy scene of Filipino bands making pop records that sound like they were made 15 years ago in Sweden — see and hear, for instance, The Wentletraps. (I like the instrumental “Vignettes.”) I’d like to hear their cover of “Just Like Honey,” but I can’t find it online. OK, maybe you knew there was a Filipino twee pop scene — but did you know there was a Filipino Christian twee pop scene? These guys can’t be the only Christian pop band in the world called “Grace Period” but I’ll bet they’re the best. (Listen: “Can’t Get Away From You.”)

Anyway, if this is all too bright and sweet for you, cleanse that palate with a really disturbing ukulele version of “Helter Skelter” by Karinne Keithley. OK, I’ll concede this is bright and sweet too. But in a “Helter Skelter” kind of way.

It’s a scary old world this. One minute you’re standing in a seedy old pub, surrounded by drunken, bearded mammoths with skin heads and Slayer T-Shirts on, setting up your guitar to play what will be the most disheartening and un-well received gig of your life and the next minute, you’re sitting in your room playing Aphex Twin records. Music tastes change. I am a walking advertisement to this fact.

3 years ago, if someone asked me what musical genre I was into I would have told them Heavy Metal. More specifically, progressive heavy metal that swayed more onto the technical side. Now, I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that I don’t listen to that any more. I still like to indulge in a bit of Sikth or Devin Townsend from time to time, but over the past year my musical taste has taken, what the metal community might call; “a nosedive in quality” Obviously I would disagree with them, but let’s both agree that it’s definitely expanded. The main type of music I listen to now is Electronica. Artists such as: Aphex Twin (And all his variations) Mike Paradinas AKA Mu-Ziq, Squarepusher, Venetian Snares, Boards of Canada, Bjork, Portishead, The Prodigy and all other kinds of things. The thing is, a lot of these acts are more technical than the most technical of Heavy Metal, be it in a different way. Most obviously, Aphex twin is an absolute diversity gold mine from album to album, giving you anything from ridiculously layered and never repeating beat structures accompanied by eerie synth work and at times, tribal percussion to die for. At other times though Richard D James (The Aphex Twin himself) can produce the most beautiful and unique piano arrangements or dark, brooding ambient soundscapes. And what does the Metal community do to this music? Well it usually accuses it of lesser musical credit because it doesn’t choose to use conventional “natural” instruments. This is of course an utter crock. If only these people realised how much of their music is improved by such means. Hardly any electric guitar sound you hear nowadays is of an analogue sound format. Digital is the way, and those astronomically precise double bass drum rushes you bang your head to are actually probably double layered with an artificial drum map software. We are in the future people, I’m telling you.

The reason I bring all this up is because I am really sick of people who relate their musical tastes to their dress style and personality. It’s that common anti-Emo defence. We don’t hate you because of the way you dress or because of what music you choose to listen to. It’s because you call yourself an Emo and think you need to subcatagorise yourself. My Ipod is like Frankenstein’s monster at the moment. It can go from Outkast to Strapping young lad and then back to Aphex. And on the subject of Franken-Pods and Monsters, my latest addition to my Ipod was in fact, the current Queen of Pop, Lady Gaga. And guess what? I’m proud of that. I fought her charms for too long, and now in the style of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I’m going to sit back and give into absolute pleasure. The album is great. Sure, there are some bum tracks. It’s 24 tracks long, it’s going to have some stinkers but I was really amazed at how many of the songs I actually knew. She shits out hits.

Don’t think I’m a musical push over though. If there’s one thing I cant stand it’s this conversation: “So what kind of music do you like?” “Oh you know, everything and anything” No! you cant like anything. I wasn’t really asking you what genres you liked, I was asking you what artists specifically you’re into at the moment. I mean really, get an opinion for shit’s sake.

Event he crappiest genre has it’s occasional hidden gems

Except boybands. Boybands can be eliminated.

I know I have been ridiculously lazy in updating this- but you must believe that for me to wake up from my writing slumber to post this, it must be good. And oh- it- so- is.

During one of my regular music swapping session with a friend, he slipped “The Crayon Fields” into my USB. They are a four piece band from Melbourne that are just amazing in a simple and talented way. The soothing array of vocals are paired with cute melodies and instruments in the variety filled album “Animal Bells”. I love it so. Yes I do realise that this is an old album put out in 2006, just before people start accusing me of sounding like Nova (cough- new music?). Their new album “All the Pleasures of the World” was released last year (2009) so you should go and buy both albums and enjoy.

It seems as though Jack as found 4 ladies that are the female version of him, well, at least the sound just like the White Stripes, which I believe to be fantastic. Big Stereo, one of my favourite music blogs has decided to follow in the footsteps of Neon Gold, and turn themselves into a record label. The have picked Baby Monster to launch the start of their label. I’m not sure I can even begin to explain the extreme love I have for this song, it makes me ‘come alive’. Bad jokes aside, She Comes Alive’ is an enchanting track that is going to make you want to do nothing but dance, dance, dance.

Canadian singer Justin Bieber was born in March 1994 and immediately became Usher’s protegé upon being discovered by the manager Scooter Braun via YouTube. My World was released in November 2009 as the first part of his debut album. The set has resulted no less than four singles – “One Time,” “One Less Lonely Girl,” “Love Me” and “Favorite Girl.”

‘The second part called My World 2.0 is set to be released in March this year, and the first single “Baby” has already been issued. The track featuring rapper Ludacris and was written and produced by Tricky Stewart, The-Dream and Christina Milian (of “AM to PM” fame). A second single is expected to be “Never Let You Go.” “Baby” will be included on the next WelcheMusic compilation out soon.

Ungu adalah grup musik Indonesia yang beranggotakan Pasha (penyanyi), Makki (bass), Enda (gitar), Oncy (gitar), dan Rowman (drum). Sampai tahun 2007 mereka telah menghasilkan 4 album dan 2 album mini.

Karir

Ungu terbentuk tahun 1996. Motor pembentuknya adalah Ekky (gitar) dan saat itu vokalisnya adalah Michael, sedangkan drum dipegang oleh Pasha Van derr Krabb. Tahun 1997, saat Ungu hendak manggung, Pasha Van derr Krabb ‘menghilang’ dan posisinya digantikan oleh Rowman. Enda yang sebelumnya adalah roadies-nya Ekky juga ikut bergabung dengan Ungu.

Tahun 2000, Ungu mulai mempersiapkan album pertama mereka, yang akhirnya dirilis 6 Juli 2002 bertajuk Laguku. Sebelumnya, Ungu ikut mengisi 2 lagu di album kompilasi Klik bersama Lakuna, Borneo, Piknik, dan Energy. Ke dua lagu tersebut adalah “Hasrat” dan “Bunga”. Single pertama album ini, “Bayang Semu” menjadi ost. sinetron ABG (RCTI). Meski terbilang sukses, album ini baru mendapat Platinum Award setelah hampir 2 tahun album ini dirilis.

Saat hendak masuk dapur rekaman untuk album kedua, Ekky memutuskan keluar. Oncy yang saat itu baru keluar dari Funky Kopral dipilih untuk menggantikan Ekky. Album kedua Ungu Tempat Terindah dirilis Desember 2003. Album ini menjagokan “Karena Dia Kamu” sebagai single pertama dan “Suara Hati” dipilih sebagai single kedua. Baru empat bulan dirilis, penjualannya telah mencapai 80.000 (delapan puluh ribu) kopi. Jumlah yang cukup signifikan jika dibandingkan dengan album pertama yang ‘telah’ mendapatkan platinum (150.000 kopi) dalam hitungan waktu satu setengah tahun.

Pada tahun 2005, Ungu menjadi salah satu artis yang berkolaborasi dengan Chrisye di album terbaru Chrisye, “Senyawa”.

Album Melayang dirilis Desember 2005. Di albumnya yang ketiga dengan single “Demi Waktu”, Ungu mendapat double platinum. Dengan hits Demi Waktu mengantarkan Ungu jadi MTV Exclusive Artis di bulan Desember 2005. Gaung “Demi Waktu” merambah negeri Jiran, Malaysia. Empat perusahaan label berebut untuk mendapatkan hak edar di sana. SRC, perusahaan yang menaungi Siti Nurhaliza akhirnya keluar sebagai pemenang.

Ungu mengeluarkan sebuah mini album untuk menyambut Ramadhan 1427 H bertajuk SurgaMu yang dirilis September 2006. Hanya dalam tempo sepuluh hari sejak rilis mini album SurgaMu, telah terjual sebanyak 150 ribu keping. Bahkan Wakil Presiden Yusuf Kalla memberi penghargaan ‘Inspiring’ atas album religi SurgaMu. Sayangnya, saat hendak menerima penghargaan di istana Wapres, Ungu yang mengenakan setelah jas yang dipadu celana jeans ditolak masuk ke dalam istana, dengan alasan pakaian yang tak sesuai dengan protokoler istana.

Dalam Penghargaan MTV Indonesia 2006, Ungu masuk dalam 3 nominasi, yaitu Most Favorite Group/Band/Duo, Best Director “Demi Waktu” Abimael Gandy, dan Video of the Year “Demi Waktu”.[7]

Ungu dengan dukungan “A Mild Live Productions” dan “Trinity Optima Productions” membuat buku biografi. Buku yang diberi judul “A Mild Live Ungu Book Magazine” itu diluncurkan pada Kamis, 10 Mei 2007, di Jakarta.[8] Dicetak sebanyak 40 ribu eksemplar, buku tersebut memuat biografi masing-masing personil, diskografi Ungu, foto-foto, dan bahkan chord lagu-lagu Ungu.

Ungu juga sering terlibat dalam pembuatan album soundtrack. Ungu pernah menyumbangkan lagu untuk film Buruan Cium Gue yang dilarang edar. Ungu pun menyumbangkan 3 buah lagu untuk film Coklat Stroberi yakni dua lagu baru, “Disini Untukmu” dan “Sahabatku”, serta mengikutkan lagu “Berjanjilah” dari album ketiga mereka Melayang.

Dalam ajang “SCTV Music Awards 2007″ di Balai Sidang Jakarta (JHCC), Ungu mendapat 4 kemenangan. Album SurgaMu yang diproduseri Trinity/Prosound membawa Ungu menjadi penerima penghargaan ‘Album Religi’, ‘Lagu Paling Ngetop’ dan ‘Video Klip Paling Ngetop’ untuk lagu “Andai Kutahu”. Sedangkan Melayang dengan lagu andalan “Tercipta Untukmu” memenangkan kategori ‘Album Pop Rock Duo/Grup’.

Ungu kembali merilis album reguler keempatnya bertajuk Untukmu Selamanya. Album ini di-launching di empat negara sekaligus, yaitu 9 Agustus 2007 di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 10 Agustus 2007 di Singapura, 12 Agustus 2007 Hongkong dan puncaknya 15 Agustus 2007 di Jakarta, Indonesia. Lagu andalan dalam album ini antara lain, “Kekasih Gelapku”, “Cinta dalam Hati”, “Apalah Arti Cinta” dan “Ijinkan Aku”.

Menyambut Ramadhan 1428 H, Ungu merilis album religi lagi yang berbentuk mini album bertajuk Para Pencari-Mu. Dalam album ini Ungu berkolaborasi dengan ustad Jeffry Al Buchori.[13] Album ini hanya berisi lima lagu, yaitu “Para PencariMu”, “Sembah Sujudku”, “Surga Hati”, “Sesungguhnya”, dan “Tuhanku”. Sebelum mini album ini dirilis, tiga dari lima lagu telah terpilih sebagai soundtrack sinetron religi yang tayang selama Bulan Ramadhan.

Ungu kembali meraih penghargaan untuk kategori ‘Band Ngetop’ di ajang SCTV Awards 2007, yang berlangsung di JCC Senayan Jakarta, Jumat, 24 Agusutus 2007. Dalam ajang itu, Ungu berhasil menyisihkan grup band lainnya, seperti Ada Band, Peterpan, Radja, dan pendatang baru yang mendadak populer, Kangen Band. Pada tahun 2007, Ungu bersama Samsons dan Naff, dijuluki ‘The Rising Star’ band oleh penyelenggara konser musik akbar Soundrenaline, A Mild Live Productions dan Deteksi Productions, juga oleh raksasa label rekaman Musica Studio.

Kasus

Ketenaran, selain membawa penggemar yang banyak, juga menimbulkan dampak negatif. Seringkali konser Ungu ‘memakan’ korban. Saat konser di Mojokerto, Jawa Timur, 30 Maret 2006, puluhan wanita pingsan. Sembilan bulan kemudian, tepatnya 19 Desember 2006, konser “Popcoholic with Ungu” di Stadion Widya Mandala Krida, Kedungwuni, Pekalongan berakhir dengan kericuhan yang mengakibatkan 10 orang meninggal dunia dan enam lainnya luka serius karena terinjak-injak dan kekurangan oksigen ketika puluhan ribu orang berdesakan keluar usai menyaksikan konser mereka.

Just stumbled on this album which won’t drop on March 9, 2010.

the morning benders is a indie pop/rock band from Berkeley, California.

The members consist of:

Jon Chu
Julian Harmon
Tim Or

Listening to the whole album, very blown away on how great this album is.

Full of great indie pop/rock with a bit of that Beach Boys sound.

Not sure if one track “Cold War (Nice Clean Fight) if they were being political and being anti-war.

From what I read on how they made this album.

It took them eleven days to make this album with Chris Chu and Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bears producing it.

With ten tracks, it wants you leaving more.

Regular visitors to my blog will know that I have been championing the up-and-coming Swedish talent Erik Hassle for an awful long time now, and so I am delighted that his debut album, Pieces, has finally been released here in the UK!

As usual, I have compiled a song-by-song album ‘review’ / set of quick notes taken whilst I was listening through:

Bump In The Road

My absolute favourite Hassle song – loved it since first hearing it last year! One of my stand-out songs of 2009.

Hurtful

His first widely promoted single in the UK – unfortunately this track came in at a rather disappointing #59 in the UK charts, which I really think doesn’t do it justice! He’s been doing even more promo since then, so hopefully his next single will fare better!

Don’t Bring Flowers

Another favourite of mine, a funky baseline to it and a little bit Calvin Harris-esque in vocal, though with an over-familiar sounding synth sample (Hurtful anyone?).

Isn’t It Obvious

A nice little song with some awesome sweet/tender lyrics – but as is always the case, an album track I think.

The Thanks I Get

Piano track (I love a prominent piano!), very stripped back song, another nice album track. A little strange… it seems to be a rather bitter-sweet lyric, but there’s never the ‘explosion’ of emotion/music that I as a listener really wanted.

Standing Where You Left Me

I love the synths on this track – it has me wanting to dance from the outset. Edgier vocal, anthemic chorus – potential single?

Bitter End

Nice ‘laid-back’ sounding track, I really like the sound of the bridge on the track.

First Time

This is a rather catchy song, another potential single I think. I love the guitar riff and the lyrics are rather sensual – ha!

Love Me To Pieces

Not too sure on this track, it seems to go off to one side, and then go off to another – quite a disruptive listening experience. Kudos for the (albeit brief) prominent violin notes about half way in!

Wanna Be Loved

A great 80s synth-pop sound to the verses of this track, and a nice simple catchy little chorus.

Back to Bed

Another guitar track that gives a fairly jarred listening experience, especially with the timing being a little strange on the track, but I think it’ll grow on me.

Amelia

Raw guitar track – love it a lot!! Really showcases his voice well.

All in all, I thought that this was a rather good first album (with Bump In The Road being the stand-out track). I hope that he is able to garner a lot more success as his career progresses – this chap is clearly very talented and it would be a travesty if he wasn’t able to break through into the UK charts and achieve some recognisable success!

For those who would like to have a proper listen to the album before purchasing a copy, it has just been made available to all membership tiers on Spotify.

Recently, my homeboy Dave (aka. D-Hurt, aka. fuck-you-and-yo’-city) loaned me a CD by Korean musician Han Hee Jeong, Vol. 1: your document, and I peeped it right away. Though it was nothing outside of this world, it grabbed me right away because she has a very mellow but moving voice and creates a good atmosphere in her songs with

varied instrumentation.

Sometimes she flirts closely to a mainstream sound in certain sections, but in general it’s pretty fresh. The instrumentation itself isn’t wholly amazing (i was dying for an electric guitar solo in some places, but that’s just me), it’s very atmospheric and at least not typical. It’s really her melodies that make her work exciting, though. They move around in all the right places and are catchy too, even when slow and soothing.

Here is a song off the album. I couldn’t find my favorite because i don’t know how to type out the Korean but this will do as an introduction to anyone else:

I was a bit surprised about the style of music, I had thought i’d be something else judging by the cover, but she’s a serious musician. I always also surprised to find out that she wrote, arranged, and produced the album. I’m not sure if she couldn’t get a legit producer, but i’m a little dubious about people producing their own albums sometimes (unless the record label is offering you some mainstream hack that will limit you), but she did a good job over-all.

So of course we had to pay tribute to the remarkable artist and entertainer, Michael Jackson. Whether he was disliked or loved.. his message was simple: Spread Love. Producer, Ken Ehrlich told ET’s Kevin Frazier,

“The people that we picked to perform this 3D version of ‘Earth Song’ are the people that I really feel Michael would have wanted to be there — Celine Dion, who was always one of Michael’s favorites. Carrie Underwood, who we talked about the night that I met with him. Usher, who we know he loved. Smokey Robinson, his mentor. And Jennifer Hudson, who performed at the memorial service that we did, but was also someone that Michael really admired a lot.”

Lady Gaga with her heel-less heels and outrageous wardrobe presents “Pokerface” with a following performance with Elton John. This chick stands out for sure with her many many outfits… but the world loves her music regardless.

And finally, Beyonce. {smile} I thought her performance was amazing… a little bit too much at the end with the head banging lol.. but awesome nevertheless. She really put her all into this one and it was probably one of her best live performances in her career thus far. Check it out.. if you missed it.

With The Eye Of A Skeptic… – Bill Price (Grass Magoops Records)

This is old time Country dance, girl boy harmonies against a roots rocking band led by the jubilant skitter of the Cittern (a sort of large bodied mandolin.) This is not all though; this is the personal political, the thoughtful, the wishful, the dreamer making songs, the watcher singing.

Analog Love – Cassis and the Sympathies (Wunderblumenmusik)

Benign, serene coming down from the clouds willfully we slow dive into Analog Love, a neon lit lounge, default setting on sultry, though soon enough we allow the lady to take our hand and dance us into a wide open cinema land.

This is new wave old romantic, ambient, impulsive, addictive, a darker Julee Cruise, a content Nico, still slightly dangerous, a sweetly lethal bubblegum, deep blue tripping over the rhythm disguised as sighs.

There is that skewed perspective that Lydia Lunch gave on Queen Of Siam, though this time the chanteuse is backed by a mixture of Yello and seemingly old time wicked jazz musicians playing for their souls.

In these songs disturbing desire is just, always JUST, a finger click away. These are invitations to a languid version of Hell, an acceptably edgy version of Heaven. Piano and Accordion entice and bewitch in the guise of slick warped ballads, tears and escape, they urge us to close our eyes and

It’s late… I just worked until 1 am and now I have to study for my exam tomorrow morning so maybe I’m not thinking straight but….. I think I’m gonna post the new Justin Bieber song. Off of his next release, My World 2.0 is ‘Pick Me’. This song has a real nice beat (thank you SoundZ) that I think is what makes me like it so much, but I can’t deny this kid can sing as well, so the vocals aren’t half bad as well. Enjoy!

Music Monday on Tuesday -- Crash Kings

Three guys + bass + keyboard + drums = rock band? I know, I was skeptical too. I mean, who has ever heard of a rock band without a guitar? (I know my music savvy readers will correct me.) But after a day of solid listening I’ve been made a believer. Apparently some kickass bass playing, strong drum beats, and a non-sissy keyboard does make a pretty cool rock band. Who knew?!

Crash Kings is made up of two brothers, Tony (keyboard/vocals) and Mike (bass) Beliveau and Jason Morris (drums). And apparently a band involving brothers includes a TON of chemistry and really is a lot like Oasis part deux or 75, because these guys do fight, like good siblings should. Although from what I’ve read, they’re not punching each other in the face, so that’s a major bonus or not, I guess it all depends on how bloodthirsty you are. I get all my fight needs met by watching hockey, so… Moving on….

According to drummer Jason Morris:

Brothers have a much closer relationship and are much quicker to fight than strangers or friends who get into a room together to make music. At the same time things move faster because brothers tend to think similarly and ideas get out more quickly.

Of course, if you have siblings, you can relate.

The group formed in 2006 and was discovered by Linda Perry who met Tony while he was working at a restaurant and happened to be waiting on Perry. She signed them to her label, Custard Records, shortly afterward. She hooked them up with Universal Motown and from there they went on to work with producer Dave Sardy, who produced their self-titled debut album, which was released in May last year. They then went on tour with Chris Cornell. They’ve also toured with a wide array of artists ranging from David Cook, Mason Jennings, and Stone Temple Pilots.

I spent a good deal of time trying to classify the sound of this band, and I can’t quite pin point it. Dave Sardy was quoted as saying, “The Crash Kings are the missing link between Queen and Rage Against the Machine.” I’m not sure I totally agree with that, but I guess I don’t disagree either. Although I don’t really see any sort of connection to be made between Queen and Rage Against the Machine, but perhaps that’s just me.

Whatever category you place this trio in, I can guarantee that there won’t be another group that sounds like this. The music alone is wonderfully orchestrated. You don’t even miss the guitar when you’re listening. In fact, there were a few times I swear I heard a guitar, but upon further research I learned that the group uses various tools to add a TON of necessary fullness to their tracks.

With tube overdrive and multiple amps Mike’s bass brings heaviness to the band’s sound. On top of that Tony plays a clavinet (a keyboard with guitar strings), which has been customized with a large whammy bar allowing him to bend notes like a guitar producing an entirely new sound.

The sound of the album varies quite a bit throughout the album. Again, maybe it’s just me. There were a few times where I was faced with the feeling that I’d heard the music before, perhaps in my past life, that I have yet to prove I didn’t live. But then I’m hit with a feeling of newness that makes me like the group even more. I’ve been dealing with a lot of that “Gahhh, kids these days just can’t make good music to save their trendy little souls!!!!” (I’m an old 28…so I can say that.) So when I heard Crash Kings I think a little part of me regained some hope that new music can exist, not just the same old crap re-branded.

Another reason to like these guys, the name of their band, “I came up with the name because we are all very absent minded and accident prone which makes for great Rock and Roll,” says Mike. I KNEW I should have focused my accident prone nature into something productive, you know, like music! If that’s what it takes to make great rock and roll, then I could be the greatest artist ever in the history of music!! (just kidding, talent is a pretty vital too.)

Now onto the good stuff…my favorite songs!!

Mountain Man – This is song has that bit of an edge that I would expect to hear from a rock band. It was also one that struck me with a vague feeling of familiarity, and after the 7th or 8th time I’m thinking I get a little hint of Jack White in the vocals. Or some Josh Todd, from BuckCherry? Either way, it’s a great tune, the bass really carries the tune, and again, you don’t even miss the guitar.

It’s Only Wednesday – I can’t figure out why this song sounds familiar, but I like it. It’s catchy, the keyboard is wonderful, and it has a relatively simple yet thoughtful arrangement. The “faux-guitar”/uber-distorted bass(?) toward the end of the song is just awesome and adds a “rock” feeling to an otherwise pretty poppy song.

14 Arms – Another one of my favorites. I spend most of the time listening to this song trying to dissect the different elements in the song, mostly trying to separate the bass from that pseudo-guitar sound, but I think my ears are broken. The only thing I dislike about this song is that horrible “screaming/singing”, it’s not easy on the ears and actually makes me cringe a little, thankfully it’s not throughout the entire song.

You Got Me – An edgy song that tends to get caught in that place in your brain that loves a good melody. The lyrics are a bit on the “hmmm…” side, but aside from that, the arrangement is composed pretty well, and there parts in the song, like the chorus, when you can really hear the 3 basic elements combine perfectly yet it doesn’t feel stripped down and empty.

My Love – This song gives me flashbacks to listening to The Beatles or Elton John, I can’t quite describe it, but there’s something there…HELP! Either way, it’s a great little song, and I love the keyboard sound driving it forward with the steady march of the drum following close behind.

On a completely unrelated note: I’m apparently still not back to 100% as far as normal brain function is concerned. (Yeah, that’s what I’m going with, doctors say everything is fine, but it shouldn’t be THIS hard to think. Seriously.) So, sorry my posts aren’t as awesomely awesome as my posts usually are. (hahaha) One of these days I’ll be back in fighting form and kick this blog’s ass like I used to, like that one week back in October. (lol) Thanks for reading, you guys are awesome!

Hot Chip - One Life Stand

Themes of marriage and commitment work surprisingly well in music that isn’t rock. In “My Love”, Justin Timberlake asks if his girl would “date him on the regular” and refers to a “ring” that “represents his heart”, over one of the finest R&B tracks in living memory. More recently, Beyonc used “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” to implore young men to make that commitment, in order to prevent the pains of post-breakup jealousy. Conversely, in rock music, similar subjects all-too often fall flat and limp and mawkish. It’s little wonder some of my favourite music is so dark, because an awful lot of empowering music is unavoidably dull and derivative.

Hot Chip fall neatly into this marital R&B turf, boasting an array of catchy hooks and melodies that would function just as well were they not to be serviced by an arsenal of squelching synths and chart-reflecting beats. Their music veers exceptionally close to soul, and also to the old-school songwriting of Robert Wyatt and Paul McCartney, albeit with a modern instrumental bent. Following the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach taken on 2008’s Made In The Dark, the band has toured relentlessly, refocused, and emerged with a triumphantly mature new record, entitled One Life Stand. No more a bachelor, and now encumbered by the responsibilities of fatherhood, frontman Alexis Taylor has helped forge an album that is considerably more pruned down, and lacking the quirky excesses that previously plagued some of their weaker material.

One Life Stand is… solid. In places, as on the New Order-ish opener, “Thieves In The Night”, it is inspired. Elsewhere, it sees the band knuckle down and write richly melodic and warming songs about the joys of companionship and brotherhood. The album’s opening quartet of songs recall various eras of dance music – synth pop, disco, house, piano-stomping Motown. To the band’s credit, it never sounds too well-trodden, and, in the title track, they re-earn the truly great electro-pop crown previously bestowed upon “Ready For The Floor” and “Over And Over”.

Then, the band tones thing down for a middle section that some will find… slushy (sorry!), but other will cherish for its broad and smile-inducing balladry. Of particular interest is the afore-referenced “Slush”, which emerges from a bizarre vocal warm-up exercise and takes a while to get going. But when it does, it is properly good, and fashioned from a very McCartney II-esque mould. Four minutes in, a beautifully subtle brass arrangement combines with almost tear-jerking steel drum, creating a final two-and-half minutes of downbeat, melancholy yet utterly compelling music which defies genre. As the song is swallowed up by a foetal fog of atmosphere dust, you would be a cold-hearted creature not to be touched by it in some way.

The final three tracks see a return to Hot Chip’s preoccupation with electronic music. “We Have Love” is shadowy and danceable, and unfolds like a less crazy version of the last album’s “Don’t Dance”; “Keep Quiet” is sinister and rides along vaguely tropical percussion and synth glows that would not have gone amiss on the Fever Ray album. Finally, we are left with the triumphant house of “Take It In”, which performs the band’s great trick of shifting suddenly from a faintly worrying minor-key verse to an anthemic major-key chorus, with precision-honed perfection.

One Life Stand will probably bore a lot of listeners. It doesn’t radically alter the landscape of quasi-dance music; it doesn’t permit the band to indulge in their more insane electronic compositions. Instead, favouring a more subtle strategy of writing more-than-competent pop songs, the band’s new focus and concision pays great dividends. Never messy or sprawling, One Life Stand is a well-sequenced work that never outstays its welcome, and I think Hot Chip have finally created an album-lover’s album.

Some Moths Drink The Tears Of Elephants – Boister (Piano Parasite Productions)

Ah this delightful disturbance, this redemption in the darkness. Do you know how ghostly carnival lights seem, from a distance, on a rainy night? This is the soundtrack to that feeling.

Produced by legendary maverick/storyteller Jim Dickinson, who once channeled the sweet twilight of Big Star into something eternal, this collection, seems to be ancient Pop, perhaps even tomorrow’s Americana, Though with wonderful contradiction, there is a fragmented European soul breathing between the lines too.

It starts with a languid gasp perhaps sigh , definite slow motion thoughts catching up to the moment, the music subtly builds, the room the picture fills with detail, the story unfolds ragged yet elegant. Funeral music that makes you feel very much alive.

Then a lullaby morphs into a sly grin take on Brecht, the band swaggers, the curtains, windows, thrown open onto a vibrant street gathering, a party full of tension.

Then a drum thing that seems to be slowed fractured down sympathy for the devil grooving into horns and guitar, washing up against the vocals, then without noticing we have slid into a perfect rock song sway, a gift with gentle hooks that we will be humming months from now.

These are tunes that are built fragile, crafted intricate standing there, the title track: quick take a snapshot before it all falls down, but it never falls down, no matter how harsh the rhythms that swirl around it, rudely affectionate.

Then the weirdest thing: I hear the east, the far east, not east America, but also: I hear almost a ska thing going, I hear the islands, come on dance and Thank You.

Then invited into this strange tent at this strange market, we shiver into an exotic fumbling before the band throws another cruel ballad or three our way, and as they are wrapped in the most beautiful melodies, we catch them easy, we are captured easier.

Layered and complex, yet never contrived this is a near perfect release.

Conrad Murray Will Surrender Voluntarily Monday Morning.

Okay now Enough Is ENOUGH. He Killed Michael Jackson; He Knows It, We ALL Know It! So WHY The Hell Are The Authorities Playing With This Fool? All week Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Conrad Murray, was said to be turning himself in. Now they’re saying he will walk into court on his own free will Monday and face the judge after being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of the King Of Pop. Word on the Blok is that counsel for Murray spoke by phone with members of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office this morning and the D.A. agreed Dr. Murray could surrender without being arrested. Unless the LAPD intervenes on its own and hooks Dr. Murray up, word is he’ll show up in court with a bail bondsman on Monday. Also, word is the recommended bail will be $25,000, which will be posted on the spot. The arraignment will take place at 1:30 PM on Monday.

The judge will order Dr. Murray to go to an LAPD station for booking. It’s unclear how long Murray will have to appear at the station.

No one needs most of what we refer to as pop culture. When we talk about consumerism being the production and sale of unecessary things, this is one of the things we mean.

Necessity does not preclude the charming. But most people’s sense of what is charming has been perverted and degraded—this, too, explains what we mean by taste.

“Vulgarity is the only sin,” says Jouhandeau. And he was immunized against it by excessive vice.

Individuation requires intercourse with the Demon—and the Demon is never too simple.

One cannot be blatantly subtle. There is no such thing.

It is more effective, in the end, to be intelligent rather than blunt, oblique rather than direct, opaque rather than transparent. Intelligence usually wins out in a contest, the oblique phrase is better crafted than the straight-on one, and opacity is not so much a choice as a mode of survival. Besides, the search for transparency quickly becomes a game in “eternal regression.” What is finally transparent always escapes just over the horizon.

The reader can change my words if he wants, and reuse the ideas, so long as the events, the movements, of thought here, remain the same.

Philosophy is still not sufficiently modern. Literature got there ahead of it. This is why Deleuze, for instance, writes about literature in such a rapturous, and sometimes undeserved, tone. He is pleading for a particular canon (a non-canonical one), and he really does believe in it. (See his essays in Dialogues with Claire Parnet for example.) Philosophy’s perpetual lagging behind art also plays a large role in his rejection of the history of philosophy. If philosophy were more contemporary, like literature—more of the contemporary scene, and thereby both more insightful about it, and more useful as a corrective against it—then he could have kept it. Instead he jettisoned the history of philosophy pretty much wholesale. And rightly so. Still, he often gets literature wrong, especially when it comes to American writers. Like Foucault, he is really unfamiliar with America and tends to idealize.

One can only take so much prissiness in literature, and then it’s time to call in the vultures and jackals. I mean the critics of course.

Modernity in writing scares all upper-crust types, because it implies the end of rarefied language as a status identifier.

Urbanity gets tiresome. And then the danger of accepting the rube for the genius sets in.

Modern literature should always be plain. Beckett is the plainest of all modern writers. He uses small words, always, and never gestures to his literary pedigree. If he has influences, they are unimportant.

From the photographs of him, one can see that Beckett had the hands of a farmer. They were great hands, thin, but strong, and peculiarly large.

Robbe-Grillet had this to say about Beckett’s characters:

“Murphy, Molloy, Malone, Mahood, Worm—the hero of Beckett’s narratives deteriorates from book to book, and faster and faster. Feeble, but still capable of traveling on a bicycle, he rapidly loses the use of his limbs, one after the other; no longer able even to drag himself along, he then finds himself imprisoned in a room, in which his senses gradually abandon him. The room, shrinking, is soon reduced to a simple jar in which a rotting and obviously mute trunk ultimately falls apart altogether. At the end there remains no more than this: ‘the shape of an egg and the consistency of glue.’ … …all these creatures which have paraded past us served only to deceive us; they occupied the sentences of the novel in place of the ineffable being who still refuses to appear there, the man incapable of recuperating his own existence, the one who never manages to be present.”**

This is our condition—diminishing, and at the same time, invisible to each other, to ourselves.

Good Old War hark back to times when it was cool to play in a band with two acoustic guitars and a drummer while all of you would sing in perfect three part harmony with one another. I watched the last couple of episodes of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien this past week. I hadn’t watched one episode of the late night talk show since O’Brien took over, but I always knew that I preferred O’Brien over his predecessor Jay Leno from watching Late Night for years. (That and his years with The Simpsons were easily the best in that show’s history.) He is a vastly superior comic who doesn’t have to depend on clichés and newspaper clippings sent in by his viewers to write a joke.

His last few shows included a gag where he pieced together the most expensive comedy bits ever in order to run up NBC’s bill. One night, he dresses up the world’s most expensive car as a mouse whose theme song is the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” and the next he “buys” a former Kentucky Derby winner dressed in a mink Snuggie™ watching restricted NFL footage. O’Brien outdid that with a giant sloth skeleton “purchased” from the Smithsonian, spraying an “original” Picasso with beluga caviar.

These bits were a stroke of genius as he appeared to be really sticking it to NBC by running up the bill for the show. It’s like that guy in the office who’s about to be laid off, so he gathers as many office supplies as he can fit into his car before leaving. The sketches were so convincing that it prompted outrage from viewers over wasted spending. This is the type of comedy that gets beyond those “wacky politicians in Washington” and men are from Venus” triviality. This is the same “outside-the-box” comedy that doomed shows like Arrested Development or…um…that’s pretty much the list.

Amidst all the comedy, in one truly sincere moment, O’Brien had this to say:

All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.

While positive and gracious in his exit, O’Brien left me feeling a bit…well…cynical about the whole thing. His message was true and from the heart. He’s probably right in that cynicism doesn’t lead to many good things. Of course how can he feel cynical with that $40 million buyout from NBC…

Sorry. Cynicism just took over.

I don’t blame O’Brien for taking the money. I think it was shitty how NBC treated him. I’m with Coco on this one.

His cynicism comment got me thinking about the fine line between cynicism and critique. It’s hard in these days of post-Bushian patriotism and post-Obama Hope™ and Change® to critique anything without running the risk of the “cynic” tag. A cynic looks at an occurrence with skepticism and questions motives or perceived viability – or at least that’s how I take it. Why shouldn’t we closely examine every situation for inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or dishonesty? Should we just accept everything at face value? Is everything as wonderful and altruistic as others would like us to believe?

Because we question one’s motivation or analyze the unseen effects of an event does not mean we are adding nothing to the conversation as the term “cynic” implies, especially in O’Brien’s use of the word.

Is the age of cynicism dead? Did it get thrown out with irony? It sure seems that way sometimes.

Take the Pavement reunion. No one, including myself, thought this gig would happen once much less a full-blown world tour that includes every summer festival on the circuit. It seemed as if front man Stephen Malkmus was tired of working with suspect musicians and the rest of the band was tired of his ego. A reunion seemed out of the question.

Why are they getting back together? It has to be the money. Look at the killing Pixies made. Dinosaur Jr is more popular than ever. Even a band like Cap’n Jazz reunited for one night not just to relive old times and to give their fans another taste of what they miss, but it also happened to coincide with C’nJ off-shoot Joan of Arc’s album release and tour. These bands all wanted to make some cash off their legacies while they still could.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with any of this. It’s great that Conan O’Brien was at least able to walk away with millions (sadly sans the masturbating bear). I love that my favorite band Pavement will make a ton of money this summer. They should. I won’t begrudge them that. If pointing out monetary benefits as motivation or somewhat justifiable consolation makes me a cynic, then so be it.

Cynicism is not dead (nor irony). Sure, it’s critique’s older, uglier step-brother, but it’s necessary. It shouldn’t paralyze us with apathy. However, it also won’t keep us from smashing those rose-colored glasses of ignorance. I’m okay with tempered cynicism. It has it’s place no matter what Conan O’Brien or anyone else has to say about it.

Of course, as I write this, I’m wondering if I just wanted to up my visitor count by mentioning “Conan O’Brien” and “Pavement reunion” all over this post. Maybe I am, but it doesn’t mean that this post holds any less truth.

It has often been remarked: Children do not love. They merely care.

As a society becomes more childish, it becomes more concerned with the family and its maintenance. This reflects the inability of the society’s members to conceive of anything else as the engine or the goal of human endeavor. Mature societies are confident in their parenting and other family skills, and hardly ever comment upon them.

Intellectuals sometimes become annoyed easily because they have an inner life. They are busy working out the sentence structure of their thoughts, so to speak. For most people, thinking remains amorphous unless it is written down. For the intellectual, writing is incidental to the real task of thought.

The Underground Lady spends most of her time in used bookshops and old museums, and empty spaces long abandoned by a society set upon going only to the noisiest, most pointless places.

Nightclubs should be banned. They replaced the cafe and thereby made people more stupid. The “bar” is America’s compromise—where, being neither cafe nor nightclub, everything is tepid, from the conversation to the booze.

Political corruption flourishes in America because the people drink beer rather than real liquor. No politician was ever corrupt in Ireland, for example, that didn’t get what was coming to him in the end. Drinking whiskey is a good education for revolution—it teaches one about the potential for riot inherent in every crowd of strangers.

Americans have to learn how to scare their politicians more, and each other less.

The real reasons that America is not respected in the world today are that it is regarded as a nation of buyers rather than sellers, of talkers rather than doers, of fighters rather than builders, and so, of children rather than grown-ups. Notice that this is a complete reversal, on every count, of how the world saw America a mere fifty years ago.

The intervening time-span in the above, regarded by many Americans as a period of unparalleled triumph, was in fact a phase of precipitous moral and cultural decline. All the popular measures for the nation’s ”success” in America today mislead and misinform.

Europeans who believed once that America’s decline would profit them, are learning now how wrong they were.

In order to regain its past levels of success and cohesion, America must ignore all the prescriptions being offered it today by its internal political, corporate and journalistic classes. They are a large part of the problem.

Detachment comes at an awful price, especially where history and one’s fellow countrymen are concerned.

The use of the first person “I” indicates nothing more, nor less, in my writing, than any other usage. ”I” is an elastic expression.

I think that one should be able to offer the most awful assessements of one’s own country and be taken seriously by others who are willing to do the same, all in a ruthless attempt to get at the truth of the matter and improve the general welfare and alter the direction of the whole. However, I am under no illusion that such an exchange is even possible in America today—this is one of the prime indications that the decline of a once great nation is nearly complete. And so I left: I could no longer really talk with people there.

Detachment is either ruthless or fake.

I have no grudge. I am impartial about almost everything.

Humanity has never felt freer than it does in Europe today, where there is the sense that one can do anything. How appalling and insipid.

The consumerist illusion is such than many who participate in it enthusiastically lose the ability to detect the illusion itself. This occurs whenever people think they are being “self-conscious,” an impossible construction. This is really how advertising works on people, especially “self-conscious” advertising.

Commercials depict people that can only be described as pathologically happy. No wonder bipolar disorder is so common in modern societies.

Ex-patriotism cannot assuage the deeper wounds of the soul that drive one to such an extremity to begin with.

There is a kind of planned carelessness which isn’t planned.

Knowledge and knowingness seldom meet.

The Underground Lady is not fooled by the aping of her vocation—there is no type for the Bohemian except for the grounded.

The third of the Urges comes in broad daylight. He knocks on my door and runs off. Sometimes he hides in the post-box and snatches a letter from my hand just as I’m about to retrieve it. Later I find it, tucked between some old newspapers, of which I have many, or beneath a potted plant. All these shenanigans are pointless. He is the harbinger of meaninglessness and chaos in my life. He is the doom that enters in at first through small things, like a sore neck, and forgetfulness, and the small uncontrollable spasms of a finger. This is the true nature of mortality: everyday, local, squalid.

Many a music nerd has written with gusto and enthusiasm of their love for pop. Perhaps it’s a statement of reaffirmation one has to make in order to remember why and to justify all the time spent listening, writing, enjoying, seeking out, talking about. I don’t plan on being an exception, unless you’re Dorothy Parker, people love to discuss the things they love and I love pop music. The exuberance of a good song, the immediacy or the delicate introspective nature, or the connection even when you’re alone, or the rawness, the purity. These are the things that make pop music relevant. It brings people together, and creates communities–a conversation. When Morrissey or Ian Curtis are singing about being alone, I am alone with them. A good pop song can be distantly close–the sort of reserved intimacy of a fragile song by Felt or the jolting, celebratory, thrashing nature of a song by The Buzzcocks. There is a transcendent quality that Modernist painters could only have ever dreamed of in pop music. It’s colours exploding or the droning in your head, on the street, in your lovelife. In failures of others we see in ourselves; we see the world, but goddamn, those failures can make amazing and honest songs. I don’t mean honesty in the sense of autobiographical or historical, but honesty in the sense of some subjective truth or truth in our collective memories. Pop music is true.

So now that I’ve confessed my love for pop, it seems only appropriate to present today’s selection for my diet towards going deaf, which is “Far Away” by Cut Copy. First off, I would like to address the issue of writing about a song that is no longer brand new, but also not old or retro–it’s a bit of a faux pas to do so. That said, I’m doing it anyway, because after listening to this song for nearly 2 years, it is still robust and fresh and not in the least exhausted or passé. The song is perfect pop, if I dare say so. It rides the border between pop and electronica deftly, allowing polished elements from the latter genre to cohere with the joy of the former. Layers of sound dynamically erupt in bleeps, pulsing basslines, swift drumming, synth stabs and clean guitar, culminating with vocals that encourage one to sing along. The album, In Ghost Colours, is a half accurate title, while colour is all I can think about when listening to this song and the rest on the album, ghosts are far and away from me, indeed this song and the album too, are very much alive. Simply put, “Far Away” combines conventions of the pop song structure, the same earnestness and soul, with the complex elements of electronica without the sometimes sterile results. For these reasons, I think the song will remain a favourite of mine for years.

This is a quite rare tune in the sense that every now and then there are these songs that you can’t label as strict as others, and this song is such an example. In recent years I’ve come across only one other song that I’d put in the same category as this one. It’s a song called Waiting For U with Dee Zee.

Maybe it’s because both songs have a kind of mystic vibe around them that puts them apart from other songs. Anyway, both songs are really great and even though there are over 25 years between them they seem to share some kind of common legacy.

MSTRKRFT (ft. John Legend) – Heartbreaker (Wolfgang Gartner Remix)

MSTRKRFT (pronounced “Master-craft”) is an electronic music group from Toronto, who are signed to Dim Mak Records. The group was started in 2005 by Jesse F. Keeler formerly of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas) formerly of the electropop group Girlsareshort. Al-P was also the producer for Death from Above 1979s album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine. The duo has been close friends, as well as work partners, for a long time. MSTRKRFT also produced Die Mannequin’s first EP, How to Kill, and Magneta Lane’s second LP, Dancing With Daggers.

MSTRKRFT have been commissioned to remix songs by such artists as Justice, Bloc Party, Metric, Annie and The Kills.

Greetings all.

I hope the end of this cold, cold week finds you well.

The tune I bring you today is an old, old favorite, something that I discovered quite by chance.

Many years ago, back in the garage/mod days, I happened to have picked up a couple of Herman’s Hermits 45s at a record show. Though the musical selections posted herein might not lead you to believe that I would be a fan of Mr. Noone and his friends, it pays to remember that alongside dreck like ‘Mrs Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter’, the Hermits were, like so many of their British Invasion contemporaries, beneficiaries of some of the finest songwriting available. A quick look at an HH greatest hits collection reveals the handiwork of Graham Gouldman, PF Sloan and Steve Barri, Goffin/King, Carter/Lewis and others.

I picked up one of the 45s in question in order to get the Barri/Sloan song ‘A Must To Avoid’. The 1965 Top 40 hit is one of the groups best moments, with ringing, folk-rock guitars, beat group harmonies and a very interesting melody (especially in the verse). When I got the record home, I flipped it over and saw a title I didn’t recognize, so I decided to give it a spin.

Good thing I did, because if I hadn’t we wouldn’t be here today, discussing ‘The Man With the Cigar’.

‘The Man With the Cigar’ is a haunting number that quickly became a fixture of my mix tapes, and remains a fave these 25 years later. I haven’t been able to find out much about the writers Larry Kusik and Barry Richards, nor have I been able to confirm whether or not this is the same song that appears on an early 45 by soul great Lou Courtney. In addition to the aforementioned b-side, ‘The Man With The Cigar’ also appeared on the album ‘Both Side of Herman’s Hermits’, which also includes a cover of ‘Bust Stop’ and a jacket illustration by none other than Frank Frazetta(!?!).

Either way, it’s a great record that ought to be better known, instead of languishing as an obscure Herman’s Hermits album track (and b-side).

Oddly enough, despite having pulled out the 45 some time back, specifically to digimatize it and post it here, it has become lost in the mighty sea of wax in my record room, so I bring you the song recorded from the LP (in which case you get the cool Frazetta picture, so it all balances out).

I hope you dig the song as much as I do, and I’ll be back on Monday.

Miami Horror is spearheaded by Benjamin Plant, a 22 year old producer /composer from Melbourne, who makes electropop with a disco-house throwback style. He started getting international recognition DJ-ing in various high profile international events in LA, NY, Mexico and Europe as well as remixing artists like Pnau, Midnight Juggernauts, The Presets and Datarock. From being a solo project, Miami Horror ended up turning into a full-fledged live band with Josh Moriaty on vocals and guitar, Dan Whitechurch on bass, keys and sampler and Aaron Shanahan on drums.

They are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut, which should be out shortly. The album will be both a collection of songs written and produced over the past few years by Benjamin, some as far back as age 18, along with new work which the band has created together, developing a much more mature and original sound.

Pop artist Sonia was discovered by production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman at then end of th ‘80s. She was 18 years old when she recorded her debut single “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You.” The track was a No.1 hit on the UK singles chart and was followed by her debut album Everybody Knows in 1990. It’s interesting to note that many of her tracks misses some of the words in the song titles. She sings “counting every single minute” in “Counting Every Minute” and “you’ll never stop me from loving you” in her debut hit. At the beginning of the ‘90s she placed several hits on the chart and also made a charity duet with Big Fun. Does anyone remember them today? She fell out with Stock, Aitken & Waterman and changed to producer Nigel Wright in 1991. Needless to say, her career dipped. She actually won the British leg of the Eurovision Song Contest 1993, but she was unable to lose as she sang all the entries. Another interesting note is her replacing teenage singer Debbie Gibson in the musical Grease. Last year she actually returned with the single “Fool for Love.” It was her first single since 1995.

This time I put up two completely different sounding versions of the same song. The song has absolutely nothing to do with robot’s, but I love them and hadn’t put any up any pictures of them in awhile.

I wrote this song a long time ago. I played it in a band I was in at the time called Wink. We were a fuzzy, noisy pop band. We were really into the PIxies, The Beatles, Teenage Fanclub, pretty much anything with guitars and catchy melodies. And fuzz pedals.

Our guitar player Michael was really into Paul McCartney and I was into George. He probably doesn’t remember, but once we were having one of our usual Paul versus George arguments, and I showed up at a gig we were playing and he had a bumper sticker plastered on his guitar that said “I’d rather be listening to Paul.” Guess you had to be there. If you want to hear what Michael is doing these days, goggle the Light Bachwood Movement.

This song was my first experiment with tuning my guitar different than EADGBE. The guitar is tuned to an open G, which is usually used on something bluesy (Keith Richards uses it all the time). I usually played the guitar on a Salmon PInk Plastic guitar that Michael had found. I think it was an Eko. The song was written for my girlfriend at the time.

Years had gone by, and then for some reason the song popped in my head. Since we had never recorded it, I couldn’t give it a listen to see if it held up. Frustrating.

I decided to record the song over again, and ended up doing 2 different versions of it. One of them is all guitars, fuzz and early 90’s indie stylings. This is the closest to how the song was performed originally.

At one point I was doing a lot of acoustic solo shows and had played the song. I was going to record an acoustic version, but somehow I got sidetracked and ended up with something that would have been at home on an OMD record, or a John Hughes soundtrack.

So I mentioned the band Wink. Well, Brian Keats was our drummer, and Brian was a funny guy. We were all a pretty incestuous bunch: we all hung out together, our girlfriends all worked together and were friends, we barbecued a lot. I had a great time with those guys. Brian used to tell a funny story about how he played in the Misfits for awhile and Joe Walsh showed up at one of their gigs with a bunch of Hells Angels; apparently they were way harder than any of the tough skinhead guys. Brian gave me a stereo once when I didn’t have one. I remember it was housed in this really ugly glass case, and for some reason, it was so noisy that you couldn’t really listen to quiet music on it. The hissing sounds were louder than the records.

We all went to see Fugazi one time, and I think Brian lost one of his shoes. My shirt was all ripped up for some reason.

Anyways, Brian is really bad off right now. He’s suffering from cancer and it doesn’t look good. Maybe you can send a good thought his way, and while you’re at it: be grateful for the people in your life.

NEW Art On Paper NOW Available!!!

Hey friends,

Since my last blog post I have been having a blast making art on 18in” x 24in” 50lbs. sketch paper as more affordable additions to my current series “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”. The paintings have become a little looser, more minimal, and a little more humorous than their canvas/collage counterparts. Unlike the canvas work, these new paintings on paper are completely spontaneous. Not much, if any, planning went into these pieces. I just sketched until an image began to take form and then applied a little paint here and there.

My favorite of the new work on paper is definitely “You Mufuckah You”. This piece in my opinion, is hilarious. It features some ill tempered thug in a Mickey Mouse outfit pointing his finger & wielding a knife at some unseen victim. I left the figure unfinished in areas in order to expose the sketch work that usually goes unnoticed in my paintings. I think it adds an interesting element to the work. I’d also love to create a 3-D version of this figure. I think it would make an excellent sculpture…..maybe I should put that on my to-do list.

These new paintings are all a little funny not to mention slightly deranged. With names like, “Gimme My Money”, “I Hate Mondays”, “Sometimes I Think I Try Too Hard“, “Someone To Replace Mom”, “My Mamma Told Me” & “Red Kryptonite Gets Her Everytime“…..I’m sure you can see what I mean.

This fun new selection of work is priced perfectly for the first time art buyer as well as the more seasoned collector looking to grab an affordable addition to their collection. I’ve never really said anything in a pissed off kind of way because I didn’t wanna be that person who was like a nobody and was like screaming when somebody else was standing on top of the mountain and ruling the world, I’m nobody to talk, but this morning I was like… I know she knows who I am and I’m good friends with some of the members of her team and it’s just a little much that I’m trying so hard to not look anything like her and she’ll just end up looking like me anyways so I just lost it for a second and called her a bitch and it was really immature of me and I know the world will take it in a completely wrong way because she’s on top and I’m not. Nobody knows who I am and she’s so big and I’ll just come across as some idiot who imagines these things, but me and everybody who’s been watching my career since I started know that I’m right. Kerli is an artist singned to Def jam and is 100 times better than Lady Gaga. She is far superior than Gaga in every area I can’t wait til Kerli’s new album drops and shows the jester how it’s done.

#10 I Am Not A Robot – Marina and the Diamonds

From: The Crown Jewels EP

A very soulful single coming from the Welsh artist cracks it into my Top 10. The richness of Marina Diamandi’s vocals truly is shown here. I expect her to make a huge impact come 2010 as she releases her debut album The Family Jewels. British women do rule in my opinion.

#9 Empire State of Mind – Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys

From: Blueprint 3

The best hiphop song that came out this year. Period. I would never have thought about the combination of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys working at all. It just seemed that their musical styles won’t mesh at all. However, Empire State of Mind proved me wrong big time. The song that got featured in the recent World Series delivers a patriotic message and yes, Jay-Z’s verses have really evolved in his latest album and this song showed how. Let us not forget how Alicia Keys sounded in this one. Hitting the high notes was truly spectacular and she made sure that the song will not fall apart.

#8 I Wish – Mini Viva

From: Colloquial Obsession

The British all-female pop group Mini Viva enters the countdown at #8 with I Wish. Flaunting off a very irresistible chorus, the song about regrets really excels all because of the lively vocals of Mini Viva. He could be the one who hits the light inside my soul. Great line and delivers the message perfectly. Thank you Mini Viva!

#7 Remedy – Little Boots

From: Hands

The RedOne-produced track for Victoria Hesketh, more known by her stage name as Little Boots, gets the 7th spot. The song is definitely a keeper for those who love listening to dance tracks. Remedy does possess a very sick and infectious beat that can make your head spin around. Definitely worth listening.

#6 No You Girls – Franz Ferdinand

From: Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

In my humble opinion, No You Girls is the best song from the latest effort of the band coming from Glassgow, Scottland. No You Girls features a very catchy chorus and a very scintillating guitar sound. No wonder why the song got featured in an iPod advertisement.

#5 The Spell – Alphabeat

From: The Spell

Danish pop group enters the countdown at #5 with their very impressive The Spell. The song inspired by Black Box’ I Don’t Know Anybody Else features a very powerful hook which is also groovy. Anders SG’s vocal work is simply amazing. The song sounds modern with a touch of the 80s or 90s. This song is really a must-have for your playlists.

#4 The Fear – Lily Allen

From: It’s Not Me, It’s You

Lily Allen makes her second appearance on the countdown with The Fear. What I like about the song is that it has very witty lyrics. Lily Allen really writes well. Compliment this ability with your voice and you got yourselves a very powerful combo. Fortunately, Allen does possess this combo. The Fear sounds a little bit different from common pop records. However, the song still packs a lot of punch thanks to Allen’s vocals and intelligence. Lily Allen just never stops evolving musically.

#3 Uprising – Muse

From: The Resistance

Coming off an appearance at Twilight’s soundtrack (which I found to be very disappointing), Muse came back this 2009 with their first single, Uprising, for their fifth studio effort. The guitar work sounds awesome. Matt Bellamy can really be considered as one of rock’s gods in my opinion. Muse is already a rock legend. Their craft continues to get better with every album that they release.

#2 Bad Romance – Lady GaGa

From: The Fame Monster

Initially, I thought of Bad Romance as my #1 for this countdown. However, I heard suddenly this song which also came out this 2009 which definitely blew me away. Anyway, Bad Romance is one of Lady GaGa’s greatest singles ever. Heck, even the music video looks very polished and grand. Lady GaGa’s musicality is just one of the best ever in my opinion. Even though Poker Face got overplayed before, my respect for Lady GaGa’s craft never wavered and I am very happy that my respect did not waver at all.

THE WINNER:

#1 Bulletproof – La Roux

From: La Roux

Bulletproof is the song that totally blew me away. Eleanor Jackson’s sweet delivery absolutely is the bomb. We must also not forget Ben Langmaid’s synth work in this song. Very awesome work done by the two members of La Roux. Everything about this song is simply spectacular – the verses, the chorus, the arrangement, and the vocals. I am just really happy that I got to know this song even though it was by accident.

It’s been a long time. I shouldn’t have left you. As much as it pains me, I’ll have to end up Rakim quoting here.

It’s been almost two months since I last posted. I find this kind of funny (if not, ahem, ironic) because during these two months I’ve been exposed to so many things that would have made for, in my opinion, very interesting posts. But now those things are either dated (Lady Gaga’s fabulous concert, a risqué theme party I attended, my experiences writing an article about blogging) or boring to me (Tiger Woods - nuf said), so I don’t feel like dwelling on them. Hopefully this coming year (which I just realized starts in three days) will provide as much inspiration as this last one did, along with more free time for writing.

Gosh, I cannot believe that another year has passed already. I feel like ever since I turned sixteen, the years have been passing faster and faster. It’s funny. When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to be older and just wanted the years to pass quickly, but now that I am older, I want them to slow down. I want time to reflect and make moments last, as much as I know that once the moment has passed, it’s gone. Moments seem to last forever when you’re living them, but then they sort of disappear.

God, that sounded melodramatic.

But as much as I do yearn for the days of slowly passing time and all that philosophical business, I’ve really enjoyed my first semester as an adult. I’ve really taken to all of this cooking, cleaning and decision-making, much to my family’s surprise. Back when I was living at home, I never cooked and rarely cleaned, but now that’s all I seem to be doing. I try out new recipes in my spare time. I think new ones up for fun. I clean every other day. I lend people umbrellas and scarves so that they don’t get wet or catch cold. I’ve gone window-shopping for 1950’s-style aprons. I WASH DISHES.

Since starting this domestic life, I’ve been the butt of a lot of jokes claiming that my newfound domesticity is somehow anti-feminist. This is bullshit. Anyone who has lived on their own can tell you that all of these behaviours have nothing to do with being a feminist or not. They have to do with being a responsible adult, as lame as it sounds.

The way I look at it, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, so you might as well enjoy it as much as you can and do it as well as you can. Bitching and moaning about something that’s going to be a part of my life from this point going forward is silly.

Anyways, I’ll stop now before I go into a complete rant about the hypocrisy of some so-called feminists. I’ll leave you with “My Boy Lollipop” by Millie Small which is equal parts annoying and infectious. Enjoy, if you can.

Today, the Swedish Performing Rights Society (Stim) revealed that Céline Dion’s “I’m Alive” was the most played song on Swedish radio of the ‘00s. The announcement lists the biggest songs, written by Swedish songwriters and the Céline Dion hit was included on her A New Day Has Come album from 2002. But few remembers, or even were aware of its inclusion in the Stuart Little 2 movie. There were two versions made of the video – with or without movie scenes.

Based on the obvious demographics of this show, the ‘classic rocker’ in me felt a little out of place among screaming 14 year-old girls. But that is the beauty of music and concert photography; I have the opportunity to experience (and dare I say enjoy…!) a wide variety of music and artists that perhaps otherwise I would NEVER be exposed to!

If you’ve perused our online galleries at eh! List Images then you know we have previously had an opportunity to shoot Faber Drive, but we are never one to pass on an opportunity to get some new shots and to see a new opening act – and we weren’t disappointed. The New Cities is a new pop-rock group that enjoyed a fairly successful single late in the summer 2009 with Deadend Countdown peaking at number 16 on the Canadian pop charts.

Faber Drive

These guys have LOTS of energy, which makes for challenging shooting conditions! You have to watch and anticipate their movements to frame and focus a quality shot – but the lighting at the Bronson Center is generally pretty good and we were able to get some good shots.

Faber Drive are becoming very seasoned performers; it’s been 5 months since we last saw them and I could see a more mature and polished stage show with this visit. This band has a marketable look, perhaps with the exception of the preppy boy-next-door guitar player (or, maybe that’s the look he’s going for – if so, he is bang on…!). Clearly image conscious, these guys take the time to play to the cameras and play to the fans.

This is the second Eh! List images photographers have shot at The Bronson Center in Ottawa. The venue is a converted school auditorium and has theater style seating, including a balcony; it seats 900 and most shows have a standing room crowd in front of the stage, which means….?

…No photo pit…

Frustrating to have to push your way through a crowd of screaming 14 year-old girls to get stage shots with the wide angle. Frustrating to have to either frame every picture to get the hundreds of waving hands out of the shot, or find a way to artistically include them but not have your shots look like the thousands of crowd shots actually taken by the crowd…

The space is there for a for a photo pit, but it would limit the standing room crowd and might be a challenge to secure (but it would mean better pictures for me…). Overall a nice mid-sized venue suitable for all ages, which is seriously lacking in Ottawa.

The release of Break It Up comes just over a year after much loved band Be Your Own Pet decided it would be no more. Her album with help from former Be Your Own Pet drummer John Eatherly, is the natural progression from the chaotic, random and fun loving sound of their former band. But there are the signs of a girl who still wants to go out and party but is growing up.

It’s not to say songs like “D is for Danger” are tame and boring. Although this probably not the best track on the album as it is slow and just meanders along. But on “I Hate People” with a cameo from Iggy Pop, Pearl’s sarcasm and dead pan sense of humour are showcased by singing about the things that we all hate about going out and the things that irritate us the most. And being darn proud of “hating everyone.”

Musically the album finds its influences from a swinging 60’s/70’s disco punk feel. “Band on the Run” is evidence of this as it is a stomp along, dance along, feel good song to leave a smile on your face. While singing about leaving home, growing up and being on the road, Pearl is potty mouthed as ever by “waving goodbye with a middle finger.”

Pearl uses this album to demonstrate the variation in her vocal talents where as in the past it was all about shouting and rage. She shows us she can hold a long note and surprise us. “Looking for Trouble” will get your head nodding with its simple and addictive bass line to go hand in hand with Pearl challenging your preconceptions you may have of her.

“Nashville Shores” also follows this formula with will leave you singing along in no time. It’s all about being grateful for what you have and not forgetting where you come from. Ending with a guitar solo borrowed from a country music style, it’s a genre Nashville is famous for.

It ends with the biggest surprise. The Negative Approach tinged, fast, gang vocal filled “So Sick!” which draws all the best moments from all other songs into a 2.40 minute whirlwind which will leave you feeling, well, sick and wanting puke!

One of the great things about this album as it bridges the gap between the harshness of old Be Your Own Pet albums and the direction Pearl wants to go in. It will satisfy those fans, while pulling you in a new direction.

You might find her annoying. You might think she’s badass. But she has only given us a slice of what we can expect to hear from Ms Pearl in the future.

My friend Alice recently suggested that I should write a song about stale birthday cake. I wasn’t so sure at first, but it turned into something I’m really quite fond of. Once again, Dion was a bit before my time, so there are no real anecdotes to share. He was a doo-wop singer from the Bronx who achieved stardom in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After suffering a difficult period of drug addiiction in the mid-1960s, he returned to the charts with “Abraham, Martin and John” right after the assassination of Bobby Kennedy in 1968.

After becoming familiar with his big hits like “Runaraound Sue”, “The Wanderer” and “Donna The Prima Donna”, I then discovered Dion’s version of The Drifters’ hit “Ruby Baby”. I have the 45 RPM record from my collecting days in the 1980s to prove it. Here’s Dion is mid-life, performing on the Late Late Show:

Dion’s last top 40 hit was “Abraham, Martin and John”, released shortly after Bobby Kennedy’s assassination in 1968. The released recording is sweet, but a bit overproduced. I remembered seeing him perform the song on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour as a child, and luckily, this superior performance is available on YouTube. I greatly admire his ability to play in the finger style, while singing soulfully. The man has a beautiful voice.

Inbetween his doo-wop days and the folk song “Abraham, Martin and John”, Dion produced a lesser known body of blues-influenced work which stands up nicely to the test of time. I have tried to include a few songs from that period. Dion was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989.

Very arguable if the recent roster of artists Timbaland collaborated with is shocking. I mean, we’re talking about Timbaland here. Timbaland Presents Shock Value II is an amazing, amazing album. Daughtry, Chad Kroeger, OneRepublic, Jet, The Fray, Katy Perry, JoJo, Nelly Furtado, Keri Hilson and even Miley Cyrus are all present here.

Recently featured on The Ghost Whisperer (a “TV show,” or so say my sources)… Cincinnati singer-songwriter Kim Taylor popped the news on her website yesterday that her follow-up to 2006’s I Feel Like a Fading Light will be out in a few weeks. It’ll be called Little Miracle, produced by Jimi Zhivago, and the first 100 downloaders will get “an added bonus.”

I’m hoping there’s also a physical release (or a repeat of the vinyl / different edition like she did for Fading Light).
